A little more than six years ago, a group of three language educators contacted me about starting an #edchat-style Twitter chat focused on world language teachers and their questions, issues, and joys. Six years ago this month, we started #langchat, running most Thursdays since at 8pm Eastern, helping teachers connect and learn in ways we never knew possible.
One of those first #langchat tech-preneurs was Erica Fischer, who had recently started a company to fill a gap she saw in quality immersion-style curriculum for early elementary children. That curriculum was Calico Spanish.
Sometime in 2012, I began working here and there with Erica on various Calico Spanish projects, updating a lesson, writing some copy, reviewing songs. Then, knowing that I was educated at home and planned to do so with my own children, Erica contacted me and said she’d been getting requests from parents wanting to use Calico Spanish Classic in their homeschool, but the product wasn’t designed for that situation and didn’t fit it well. She asked me to brainstorm with her what it would look like to build a curriculum for homeschooled children whose parents speak little to no Spanish. I said yes. And Calico Spanish Stories was born. To date, we’ve released three levels of this comprehensive, video story-based designed specifically for parents and teachers who may not speak any Spanish to be able to accomplish something on the journey to bilingualism.
And then, in 2016 Erica and I began talking about my taking more of a leadership role in the company.
And so, I’m honored, blessed, and thankful to announce that in addition to being Sra. Musicuentos, I am the Chief Operations Officer for Calico Spanish.
What does that mean for Musicuentos? I can say it will mean (and has meant) a little less blogging, because you know, time and preschoolers. But as I’m thrilled to see quality content pop up on new language teacher blogs every day, the mix doesn’t really need my voice so much anymore. And believe me, I will still be blogging.
Other than that, not much will change. I’ll still have a blast running Camp Musicuentos and the Brave Little Tailor. I’ll still show up at conferences here and there. I’ll still work on my ebook guides. But the primary difference will be that I will be blogging my elementary tips and resources over at blog.calicospanish.com instead of here (so be sure to add that to your Bloglovin‘!). I also do not Instagram as Musicuentos but will be using that platform as the COO of Calico Spanish.
I love connecting with all of you, and this is one more way for me to do it in a way that fulfills a dream of mine – to work on curriculum that’s based on sound pedagogy without politics or verb drills getting in my way!
