Have you thought about helping your Intermediate Mid+ students navigate an authentic novel? Spanish-learner novels definitely have their valuable place in the classroom, but in my experience authentic novels can’t be beat for exploring in-depth culture and rich language. At the same time, that rich language can be so rich that it becomes incomprehensible at worst or frustratingly challenging at best (cough, García Marquéz), which drains the value for the language learning classroom. So, let’s start off #AuthResAugust with a sale! Every year at back-to-school time, I try to encourage teachers in Spanish 3 or higher (especially AP and IB programs) to try out an authentic novel by putting my two ebook guides at 20%-25% off.
Cajas de cartón, the memoir by Francisco Jiménez, is a poignant collection of his memories as an undocumented child immigrant in 1950’s California’s agriculture circuit. I taught this novel for several years in Spanish 3. During August you can buy the ebook learner’s guide with a license to reproduce for all of your students for as long as you teach for $29.95 – that’s 25% off. Click here. (This is a learner’s guide that does not include the novel text. Novels are available on Amazon for $7 each here.)
La ciudad de las bestias is a fantasy young adult novel written by Isabel Allende. It follows the journey of a California teen named Alex and his spunky explorer of a grandmother through Brazil into Venezuela as part of an expedition searching for the mythical bestia, kind of an Abominable Jungle Beast creature. I taught this novel for several years as part of my AP Spanish course, where it fits neatly into the themes of global challenges and personal and public identities. The novel confronts issues involving the exploitation and protection of indigenous peoples in Latin America. During August you can buy the ebook learner’s guide with a license to reproduce for all of your students for as long as you teach for $39.95 – that’s 20% off. Click here.
